How UKSA supports and helps worthy projects in sailing
UKSA supporting sailing
Through the work of the Academy and the generosity of our supporters, we aim to create an inspirational environment which constantly delivers a quality experience, a culture of challenge and achievement, respect and honesty, nurturing and personal fulfillment.
Through our projects, UKSA works with some of the leading lights in the sailing world, including Dame Ellen MacArthur and Shirley Robertson OBE, and quadriplegic sailor Hilary Lister, all of who are active ambassadors for the UKSA and our charitable work.
Schools Bursaries
The Academy's "equal access and opportunity" programme ensures everyone, irrespective of background or ability to pay, can benefit from our facilities. We also aim to enlighten young people who need a new direction in life and to encourage them to channel their energies into a fun, outgoing and physical activity. Applications for bursaries should be made by teachers, social workers or care advisors who know the children well and can vouch for their social circumstances.
Gipsy Moth Project
This 22 month circumnavigation aboard Sir Francis Chichester's record-breaking round the world yacht Gipsy Moth IV gave young people who have demonstrated unbreakable spirit in the face of adversity, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds or with learning difficulties, the chance of a lifetime. The programme provided all participants with the opportunity to learn new skills and to grow as individuals within a working crew aboard an ocean-going yacht. Gipsy Moth IV is now back at the Academy and continuing to be used to take young people on adventurous sailing experiences. Visit www.gipsymoth.org for more information on the project.
Working with other organisations
As well as directing funds into our own charitable projects, the Academy helps and supports for a large number of other organisations, including providing financial assistance, staff and equipment for charities involved in sailing activities up and down the country. The Ellen MacArthur Trust receives assistance and support from UKSA, to take young people with cancer sailing on four day yachting trips.
Once you have visited the UKSA, and experienced the environment created through our funding structure, we feel sure you will be inspired to spread the word on our work, and perhaps get involved with providing assistance yourself.
Help UKSA help more...
Like any charitable organisation, UKSA is focused on helping as many people and projects as we can, but we can only do so with the continued support and generosity of sponsors, donors and private individuals. There are a number of ways, large or small, you can help and support the work of the UKSA:
- Help us by providing funding for new yachts and specialist equipment
- Sponsoring bursary places for young people of all ages
- Donating to the valuable charitable work and upkeep of Gipsy Moth IV
- Sponsoring a specific capital project at the Academy
- Sponsoring the future of British international yacht racing though the GBR Yacht Racing Academy
- Donations of equipment or resources
- Donation of time or expertise FOC
- Make a bequest to UKSA in your will
Our charity brochure contains full details of our bursary work, the Chichester Scholarship Scheme, the Gipsy Moth Project, and ways you can get involved and support our valuable work encouraging and supporting young people and sailors with a disability.
