UKSA cooks up another top marine course

In conjunction with the Isle of Wight College, United Kingdom Sailing Academy (UKSA) now run a 5 day Essential Marine Cookery course. Designed for those looking at a career within the marine industry or for the leisure sailor wanting to up their skills in the galley.

The course was developed in response to feedback from UKSA graduates working on yachts, who felt they needed to improve their culinary skills to provide first class meals to their clients aboard luxury yachts.  The galley on any yacht is a challenging place to be culinary creative, for beginners and seasoned gastronome’s alike. UKSA’s 5 day programme aims to set marine cooks of every level on course for ‘cuisine de la mer’ success!

Always at the forefront of marine industry training, UKSA combined the knowledge and expertise of specialist catering lecturers at the IW College, to develop the Essential Marine Cookery course.  Designed to introduce the fundamental skills required for catering on yachts, topics include menu planning, provisioning for long passages, understanding standards and requirements for catering for guests and crew, and practical sessions that provide students with a repertoire of delicious meals to cook with a whole day specializing on fish cookery.

The first course took place in June 2006 and was a huge success with 7 students leaving the course fully enthused and motivated to pursue a career within the marine industry. As they say for all culinary endeavours, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Jon Winter from Cambridge who attended the Essential Marine Cookery course had this to say about the programme.

‘The team delivering the UKSA programme had so much enthusiasm it was hard not to learn and enjoy yourself. They were simply brilliant. I would recommend the course to anyone, whether they felt their cooking might be up to yacht chef standard for paying guests, or like me, just  wanted to be able to fix something decent to eat for myself and my fellow crew.’

Regardless of current culinary skills, the course is suitable for anyone who enjoys food.  Whether you can cook for banquets, or have the ability to burn water, this course prepares you for essential catering tasks onboard yachts.
